Marine Fisheries asking anglers to donate Red Snapper carcasses for stock assessment research
Division biologists will measure the fish, determine the sex when possible, and remove the otoliths (ear bones) for age determination. The information collected will be provided to the National Marine Fisheries Service for use in future Red Snapper stock assessments.
Golfers help South Korea win its first team gold medal in 13 years at Asian Games
The win brought Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim more than a medal. They got an exemption from 21 months of mandatory military service, a legal requirement for all able-bodied males age 18-35 in South Korea.

Proposed legislation meant to get the DoD and VA working together to credential medical providers
Congressman Greg Murphy said the bipartisan DoD and VA Medical Credentialing Integration Act of 2025 is designed to strengthen recruitment, make government health agencies run more smoothly, and ensure service members and veterans are well cared for, all while making smarter use of public funds.
Dog found tied up without food or water training to become ENC K9 officer
The Craven County Sheriff’s Office says the pup, now named Vex, was discovered by Animal Protective Services last August, tied up outside without food, water, or shelter. The homeowner was charged and later found guilty of animal cruelty and failing to vaccinate, and three dogs—including Vex—were seized.
Extreme drought conditions tightening their grip on eastern North Carolina
The latest Drought Monitor shows a massive rainfall deficit of more than ten inches since last August, pushing parts of the northern Coastal Plain into Extreme Drought. The N.C. Forest Service warns that wildfire risk is now at a critical high. Because vegetation is so dry, even a small spark can ignite a fast-moving fire in less than an hour.
A break from extreme drought conditions may (or may not) be on the way
La Niña climate pattern has brought extreme drought conditions to 67 of North Carolina's 100 counties. National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Kren says there's a chance for a wetter end to the month of May.

The ruling is a critical win for a national class action lawsuit led by disabled veterans. They argue the company violates state consumer protection laws by charging predatory fees for services meant to be free or heavily regulated.
Fire alert issued in eastern North Carolina as dry weather and strong winds impact the region
The National Weather Service says a mix of low humidity, gusty winds up to 35 miles per hour, and dry ground conditions will make any spark highly volatile. Several coastal and southeastern counties are under a Fire Danger Statement until 8:00 p.m. tonight.
