The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is discussing public health strategies to reduce firearm violence and misuse.
Tyrell County wildfire 34% contained, covers more than 5,000 acres
The Last Resort Fire in Tyrrell County was 34% contained on Sunday afternoon, and officials with the North Carolina Forest Service said due to more accurate mapping, the fire is 5,200 acres in size.

Swine Flu Vaccine May Be Ready By September
At the present time, a swine flu vaccine does not exist. Bruce Gellin, director of the National Vaccine Program Office at the Department of Health and Human Services, says the first doses of a vaccine could be ready by early September.

Texas Must Lay Out Plan for Kids from FLDS Sect
The fate of more than 460 children will be argued in court in Monday. Texas Child Protective Services is required by law to present its plan for each child, but lawyers for the mothers of the children say that the plans do not consider each child individually.

The House is expected to vote tomorrow on a revised version of the Wall Street bailout bill. Congressman Barney Frank, who heads the House Financial Services Committee, says what may help the bill pass this time, is an increase in the deposit insurance cap. Small banks fear customers will pull their money and put it into larger institutions.

The fungal disease attacks trees belonging to the laurel family, a class short-trunked trees and evergreen shrubs, including red bay and sassafras.
ENC shelter fined for several animal care violations
The North Carolina Department of Agriculture has fined Duplin County Animal Services after an inspection discovered that sick kittens were being housed with healthy ones, that several animals taken in weren’t given a rabies and other shots as soon as they arrived, and that a dog was not given veterinary care it needed.
