Pitt County commissioners prohibit concealed carry on county property

Pitt County YouTube

Pitt County’s board of commissioners voted at their meeting Monday to prohibit carrying concealed handguns on county property. PRE’s Meredith Radford has more.

The motion, to change a law enforcement ordinance and prohibit concealed carrying of handguns on county property, passed in a 5-3 vote Monday. This decision comes despite the people who gave public comments, the 26 who sent written comments, and the over 250 people that signed a petition against changing the ordinance. Jerry Fisher, a Pitt County resident, gave a public comment at the meeting, saying the board was guaranteeing to criminals that citizens will be unarmed on county property.

“If there are acts of violence committed on any of these properties in the future, and a concealed carry permit holder becomes a victim, don’t ever forget that you were the reason they could not defend themselves or the people around them.”

Others who gave public comments mentioned their second amendment right and expressed concerns about being able to defend themselves. Some board members noted during the meeting that there wasn’t an incident involving a concealed handgun on county property that prompted this change.

This was the board’s second and final consideration of the motion to change Law Ordinance No. 4. The board first approved this motion at their meeting last month. Before this change, the ordinance prohibited the carrying of deadly weapons on county property but allowed concealed carry permit holders to carry a handgun.
