Pitt And Other Eastern NC Counties Offer Extra COVID-19 Dose To The Immunocompromised

After the CDC recommended third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for people with compromised immune systems earlier this month, Pitt County joins several other counties in Eastern North Carolina in offering third doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to these individuals. P-R-E’s Meredith Radford has more.

According to a news release, Pitt County’s Health Department began offering appointments for an extra dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine on August 25. The release said immunocompromised individuals should talk to their health care provider about the need for an additional dose of the mRNA vaccine. The release also said immunocompromised people should wait at least 28 days after their second dose, and that you should get the same vaccine as you received initially, if possible. You must meet one of the CDC’s criteria to receive an additional vaccine dose, which include active cancer treatment, an organ transplant or active treatment with high-dose corticosteroids or other drugs that suppress the body’s immune response. For a full list of CDC criteria requirements, you can visit Pitt County’s website.

Carteret County’s Health Department began offering additional vaccine doses on August 20 for immunocompromised people. The Martin-Tyrrell-Washington District Health Department started scheduling third vaccine doses last week, for immunocompromised patients who had been fully vaccinated for at least 8 months. Hyde County’s Health Department offers additional doses of Moderna or Pfizer to those who qualify, by appointment.
