Stormwater administrator/superintendent for the City of New Bern, Avery Smith, will describe how the City of New Bern is using FEMA buy-out land to create green space for flood mitigation. Avery will also explain how this project and the Duffyfield stormwater project will improve environmental qualities. A question and answer session will follow this presentation. Come celebrate World Turtle Day! Spending only a brief time on land, sea turtles are quite different from most other turtles we know. From hatchling to adult, a lifetime at sea is no small task for these reptiles that grow so big. Learn about the different species of sea turtles that inhabit the coastal waters of North Carolina and the trials they face before they even emerge from their sandy nest. Admission is free, and registration is not required. The program is part of our Maritime Heritage Series, informal lectures held in the museum auditorium and focused on North Carolina’s rich maritime history, coastal environment, and culture. Join a member of our Education Team and Experience Outer Banks history and wildlife with a guided hike on Shackleford Banks, part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore. Participants will take a ferry to an undeveloped barrier island. This field trip requires hiking through sandy terrain for 2 to 2.5 miles. The program is recommended for ages 12 and up. Among the largest and oldest sport fishing tournaments in the country, The Big Rock calls avid deep-sea fishermen to North Carolina’s Crystal Coast for a full week of angling and community celebration. During the course of the last half-century, many boats have docked here, many tourists have gathered here, and many Morehead City natives have come and gone. Join us for a free 40-minute behind-the-scenes look at the Bonehenge Whale Center. Learn about the marine mammals, including bottlenose dolphins, that live off the coast of North Carolina. The preparation of marine mammal skeletons for educational display will also be covered. The Bonehenge Whale Center operates as a partnership between the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources and the Carolina Cay Maritime Foundation. The Junior Sailing Program offers basic through advanced sailing instruction to youth ages 8 and older. Instruction takes place on the protected waters around Beaufort.This exciting program teaches the arts of rigging, sailing and seamanship, and introduces the students to maritime traditions and history. It is designed to teach the basic skills of sailing to beginners and to hone the skills of more advanced students, using a combination of time in the classroom and on the water.The program helps participants develop self-esteem, responsibility, and sportsmanship, as well as knowledge of and respect for the forces of nature. An awareness of boating safety is emphasized throughout the program.

The 63rd annual walking tour of private homes, gardens, churches, and historic places is the last full weekend in June.
