‘Maytag Virgin’ is a romantic comedy by playwright Audrey Cefaly that has been lauded as a new masterpiece of American theatre. The play follows southern school teachers Lizzy Nash and her neighbor Jack Key over one year following the sudden death of Lizzy’s husband. While the premise may sound somewhat dark for a comedy it is in the quirks and behaviors of Jack and Lizzy that humor rises and falls. The characters are unflinchingly truthful as they attempt to make sense of life in the wake of great loss that often leads to amusing results, especially on the part of Lizzy. Yet, this is no silly, romantic trifle. The dialogue packs a punch as ‘Maytag Virgin’ plumbs the depths of human emotion.
