Russian Spy Blames MI6 for Litvinenko's Death
The man British authorities charged with poisoning former KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko has responded with his own accusations. Andrei Lugovoi, another former KGB officer, says Litvinenko was a British agent trying to get compromising materials about Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Iran Accuses Iranian-American Scholar of Spying
Iran has charged a detained Iranian-American academic with seeking to topple the ruling Islamic establishment. Haleh Esfandiari, 67, director of the Middle East Program at the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, has been held since early May.

Bush's Climate Plan Faces G-8 Opposition
President Bush is urging 15 major nations to agree on a global goal for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The plan isn't playing well with critics, including some leaders with whom the president will meet at upcoming G-8 economic talks.

U.S. Missile Defense Plan Draws Kremlin's Ire
When Western leaders meet this week in Europe, they are expected to debate an American plan for missile defense. The Kremlin is furious about U.S. plans, which carry echoes of the Cold War, to install parts of its controversial missile defense system in the Czech Republic and Poland. Both are former Soviet Bloc countries that are now members of the European Union and NATO.

California Firefighters Get Break from Easing Winds
Winds are slowing in California, giving firefighters a respite from the massive wildfires. The fires around Los Angeles are contained, but farther south in San Diego County, firefighters are struggling to control them. Around 10,000 firefighters are working day and night to put out the blazes.

The massive Cedar fire in 2003 destroyed hundreds of homes in the San Diego area. Now, people who lost their homes in 2003 are providing both practical advice and inspiration to the victims of this week's devastating fires.

NASA Aids Fight Against California Wildfires
NASA launches the unmanned aircraft Ikhana from Edwards Air Force Base north of Los Angeles. It measures the heat coming off the wildfires raging there. That data is then converted to images, and sent back to the ground via satellite. It helps firefighters better react to conditions on the ground.

Elderly Evacuees Face Challenges at Fire Shelter
Among the thousands of wildfire evacuees at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium are about 100 elderly nursing-home residents. Many have spent the past three days in wheelchairs, waiting for a time when it's safe for them to return to the nursing home.

Nations Slated to Host U.S. Missile System Skeptical
While the U.S. is trying to calm some of Moscow's anxieties over a missile defense it wants to put in Poland and the Czech Republic, skepticism is growing in the intended host nations, as well. Russian President Vladimir Putin remains critical of U.S. plans.
