But the official separation can't take place until a new constitution has been approved by parliament. One of the biggest issues still being discussed is about guaranteeing the rights of ethnic minorities.
  • Republicans in Kansas refuse to endorse the idea that John McCain has it all sewn up. They give their caucus support to Mike Huckabee, the last of the leading candidates still challenging the senator. Both parties are also holding contests Saturday in Louisiana and Washington, and Democrats are holding caucuses in Nebraska.
  • Barack Obama was in Wisconsin on Tuesday when he got news of his primary victories in the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland. Wisconsin votes in less than a week, and the Obama campaign is looking for a clean sweep of the February states.
  • Barack Obama won most of the states on the Democratic side of Super Tuesday, but Hillary Clinton won the biggest ones on both coasts. Several states hold events Saturday, and next week brings the Potomac Primary in Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
  • A presidential transition is apparently underway in Cuba. Fidel Castro, who has already given up power temporarily because of illness, says he will do so permanently.
