Havelock's police chief will become New Bern's assistant city manager

The City of New Bern

The city of New Bern announced that its new assistant city manager will be current Havelock police chief Marvin Williams. PRE’s Meredith Radford has more.

The New Bern Board of Aldermen announced the hiring of Chief Marvin Williams at their meeting Tuesday. Williams says this position is a good conclusion to a lifelong career in public service.

“I’ve been in Eastern North Carolina for over 30 years, and I will use all that experience and connections just to work with the board and the city employees there on strategies to improve the lives and activities for the citizens and the visitors to the city.”

Williams has served in law enforcement and in the United States Marine Corps. New Bern’s city manager Foster Hughes said in a news release that Williams has demonstrated outstanding leadership skills throughout his career.

Williams has been Havelock’s police chief since 2018 and will start as assistant city manager in November. According to the release, his annual salary will be $135,000.
