It is 1969 and 9-year-old Buddy finds his peaceful life disturbed as a national conflict is starting to brew in Northern Ireland: unionists and loyalists want the country to remain within the United Kingdom, while nationalists and republicans are campaigning for the country to join a united Ireland. As the tension between these two opposing forces escalates, Buddy’s family must decide whether to stay or move somewhere safe. Kenneth Branaugh directs this semi-autobiographical film with an all-star cast including Judi Dench, Ciarian Hinds, and Caitriona Balfe. Belfast is infused with Branagh’s love of film and film history. With expressive black & white camera work, he circles the edges of social realism while keeping one foot firmly planted in the world of movies. (98 minutes)
Due to the variety of languages and accents represented, as well as accommodation for the hearing impaired, all films are shown with English subtitles.
