"Beyond the Fence"

"Beyond the Fence"

The Arts Council of Carteret County is proud to announce the opening of "Beyond the Fence", an exhibition showcasing the creative work of individuals currently incarcerated in the Carteret Correctional Facility and the Pamlico Correctional Institute. The show will run from May 5 to May 16 at the Arts Council's Carolina Artist Gallery, 1702 Arendell St., Morehead City, Tuesday through Saturday from 11PM to 5PM. An opening reception will take place on Monday, May 4, beginning at 3PM, to which the public and government officials are invited.

Beyond the Fence features paintings and drawings created behind prison walls. This offers a raw, honest, and often poignant glimpse into the inner lives of incarcerated artists, demonstrating how creative expression serves as a vital tool for emotional healing and personal transformation.

This exhibition breaks down the walls of isolation, allowing the community to witness the profound resilience and potential for growth within the justice-involved population. "We are honored to be able to provide a platform for these voices to be heard," said Melissa Kelley, President of the ACCC.

The artworks explore diverse themes-ranging from profound personal trauma and longing for freedom to spiritual renewal and hope for the future. Through vivid imagery and meticulous craftsmanship, the artists invite viewers to look beyond the stigma of incarceration and connect with the human experience shared by all. As a means of giving back to the community, the artwork in this show will be offered for sale, with all proceeds being donated to the charity of the inmates choosing.

For many incarcerated individuals creating art is the only time they feel truly free. It is a way of processing the past, coping with the present and imagining a better future. Being able to share this work means they are seen as human beings instead of just numbers.

"Beyond the Fence" is curated by the Arts Council of Carteret County in partnership with the Carteret Correctional Facility and the Pamlico Correctional Institute as part of the Arts Council's initiative to promote social justice and accessibility to the arts. Sponsors include the Mark and Karen Kelly Family.

The Arts Council of Carteret County is a nonprofit organization that was formed to encourage and support the development, promotion and expansion of the arts in Carteret County. Our mission is to create a vibrant community by supporting all artistic genres and promoting arts education. We believe that the arts can change community attitudes, perceptions and awareness.
