The U.S. Department of Transportation has announced Wednesday that $16.9 million from the Small Community Air Service Development Program will be allocated to 25 communities across the country. Two of the grant awards will go to communities in Eastern North Carolina. New Bern will receive $776,000 and $600,000 will go to Wilmington. The financial assistance can help communities establish air services or restore service that was lost. It also provides support to establish new routes to improve connectivity for local residents. According to a news release, the grants can be used to provide financial incentives to carriers, conduct studies on the possibilities of expanded service, and carry out marketing programs to promote existing local services, as well as address other challenges small communities and their airports may experience.
