In a note to newsroom staff Senior National Editor Vickie Walton-James announced this staffing update:

I'm pleased to announce that Marcia Davis will be joining NPR as Supervising Editor of Race and Identity.

Throughout her career, Marcia has distinguished herself in covering issues of race, criminal justice, politics and civil rights, most recently at the Marshall Project.

Previously, Marcia spent more than 20 years at The Washington Post, where she edited coverage for the Style section, the Metro Desk, the National Desk and The Washington Post magazine. On the National Desk, she led coverage of the federal government, including breaking stories on mismanagement at the General Services Administration. She also helped to lead coverage of the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Mo.

Marcia edited the Post magazine's special issue on the National Museum of African American History and Culture and authored stories on Howard University's financial struggles and the future of the black vote. Recently, she's taught advanced journalism at The George Washington University.

At NPR, Marcia will edit coverage of race and identity from the National Desk, leading a team of reporters and coordinating with desks and shows. She will serve as a liaison with the Code Switch team, working to facilitate seamless coverage of race, inclusion and diversity throughout our newsroom and the broader network of member stations.

Though this move has been in the works for some time, Marcia joins the network during a pivotal period in the nation's history. She will help shape our coverage of ongoing protests and activism around racial justice and efforts to reform policing. Her first day will be June 22. Please join me in welcoming Marcia.

Sincerely,Vickie Walton-James
