Veto Override Ends Illinois Budget Battle, But The Damage Is Done

Illinois finally has a budget. State legislators on Thursday voted to override Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of Illinois’ first complete budget in more than two years, ending a political stalemate that has helped push the state to the brink of financial ruin. The state still faces more than $14 billion in past-due bills, however, and the credit ratings agency Moody’s said it may downgrade Illinois’ credit rating to junk status.
