In North Carolina, Laws And Lawsuits Abound

Lawmakers in North Carolina were handed a legal defeat earlier this week when the U.S. Supreme Court upheld a lower court ruling that state lawmakers illegally gerrymandered 28 legislative districts, drawing them to disadvantage black voters.

Since 2011, more than a dozen Republican-backed laws in North Carolina have been struck down in federal and state courts. Jeff Tiberii (@j_tibs) of Here & Now contributor WUNC reports on the court battles over laws in North Carolina.

Editor’s Pick: Since this story aired, North Carolina lawmakers voted not to go into a special session, saying Gov. Roy Cooper does not have the authority to call for one.
