New documentary series brings in-depth, on-camera interviews, music and intimate moments with Miguel, Alicia Keys, Maxwell and Anthony Hamilton, among others.
July 29, 2016; Washington, D.C. — In a special video documentary series that debuts next week, NPR Music takes an intimate look at how artists like Miguel, Alicia Keys, Maxwell and Anthony Hamilton make music that millions of fans love. Hosted by Jason King, curator of NPR Music's R&B stream "I'll Take You There," co-founder of and professor at New York University's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and musician himself, Noteworthy provides rare insight into the ways these musicians create and how their personal background — race, family, place and the music they grew up on — shapes their art.
The series kicks off on August 3 with a documentary on Miguel. Video features will be released every Wednesday on NPR Music over the course of the summer.
"I've strived to go deeper than the typical interview by exploring aspects of their artistry that they've rarely had a chance to share publicly," King says of the series. "Each of the musicians in Noteworthy touches on topics related to their own creativity and artistic craft, as well as how they develop ideas for songs and recordings, and how they mentally and physically prepare for performances. And so viewers can expect to tune in and reconnect with — and learn amazing new things about — the artists they love."
For the documentaries, King spent a day with each musician, providing a glimpse into deeply personal locations for each artist. Miguel plays guitar in his home, then watches the waves on the beach he visited as a child; Anthony Hamilton sings "Amazing Grace" in the church where he sang his first gospel solo.
Noteworthy documentaries will live across NPR's platforms. In addition to the web documentaries and breakout social videos, King will appear on All Things Considered to discuss key takeaways on the creative process based on his artist interviews. Stations and broadcast times are available on npr.org/stations. Extended one to two hour interview segments will also be published on NPR's YouTube channel.
