What Chemicals Are Going Down The Fracking Well?

For years, the oil and gas industry has used “trade secret” claims to avoid telling the public which chemicals it uses in fracking operations. But in a major shift, the oilfield services giant Baker Hughes recently adopted a new policy: full disclosure.

The drilling companies that are clients of Baker Hughes have begun posting the information to a website called “FracFocus,” a national clearinghouse for fracking chemical disclosure.

But, why does transparency about fracking chemicals still remain elusive. Katie Colaneri from Here & Now Contributor WHYY joins host Robin Young to explain.
