Primary Recap: Hard-Fought Race In Mississippi Heads For Runoff

An expensive and sometimes dirty fight for a Senate seat in Mississippi looks like it’s heading to a run-off later this month.

Tea Party-backed Chris McDaniel narrowly defeated six-term Senator Thad Cochran, but he failed to top the 50 percent threshold required to avoid a runoff.

Meanwhile in California’s governor race, a moderate Republican prevailed to make it onto November’s ballot. And in Iowa, voters chose a female Iraq war veteran to be the GOP Senate candidate.

NPR’s Ron Elving discusses these races with Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson.
