'Creative Solutions' Possible, Israeli Official Says
Israel's current mission in Gaza has two goals, says Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev: to win the release of an Israeli soldier held hostage in Southern Gaza, and to stop rocket attacks from northern Gaza. A prisoner exchange is not an option, the spokesman said -- but "creative solutions" are still possible. NPR's Robert Siegel talks with Regev.

With help from a dedicated cadre of volunteers, paleontologists at the La Brea Tar Pits in the heart of Los Angeles continue to excavate the remains of saber tooth cats, dire wolves and other creatures from the Ice Age that ruled the region more than 40,000 years ago.

Tax Revenues Rise Above Predictions
Higher-than-expected tax revenues in the United States are expected to make a dent in the federal deficit, according to early reports. According to The New York Times, corporate taxes, taxes on stock-market profits and taxes on executive bonuses are mostly responsible for the higher revenues.

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) talks with Steve Inskeep about the use of military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Leahy is the ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. He says the president has mishandled the detainees and that Congress needs to provide guidance on how to process them.

Actor Bruno Kirby's Memorable Roles
Bruno Kirby died Monday at the age of 57 from complications of leukemia. Kirby played the would-be comedian in Good Morning, Vietnam and Carrie Fisher's boyfriend in When Harry Met Sally. Over the years Kirby played in dozens of movies, TV shows and on Broadway. This interview originally aired on July 27, 1990.
