Chicago School Closures Send Kids Through Dangerous Areas
Chicago is preparing for the first day of school, which has extra challenges this year. The city closed about 50 schools recently, so some children will have to walk through dangerous neighborhoods to get to class. The city is expanding its "Safe Passage" program, training workers who will be stationed on school routes to protect students.

Sgt. Bales Sentenced To Life In Prison For Afghan Murders
Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales pleaded guilty to killing 16 Afghan civilians in order to avoid the death penalty. On Friday, a military jury sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner Announces His Resignation
Bob Filner has resigned after accusations of groping and forcibly kissing as many as 18 women. The City Council voted to accept an agreement hammered out between Filner and city negotiators.
NSA Says Some Analysts Willfully Violated Spying Authority
The agency said the violations generally did not involve surveillance of U.S. citizens' telephone or email data. The revelation, however, casts doubt on some previous assertions from high-ranking U.S. officials.

Bread And Puppet Marks 50 Years Of Paper Mache And Protest
Bread and Puppet Theater has been a familiar presence at political demonstrations since the anti-war protests of the 1960s. Its giant puppets and raucous brass band also marched against wars in Central America, Afghanistan and Iraq. The troupe marks its 50th anniversary this year.
