Family, Friends Remember N.Y. Soldier Killed in Iraq
Staff Sgt. Dwayne Lewis of New York was hit by insurgent gunfire and killed last month while on patrol with is Army unit. Lewis moved to New York from Granada when he was nine. His family says he was ready to risk his life for his adopted country. Kathleen Horan of member station WNYC reports.

Election officials in Belarus say incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko has won the presidential vote by a huge margin. But the main opposition candidate is calling for a new election as thousands of his supporters jammed a main square in central Minsk.

The latest NPR poll took the pulse of likely voters in the 50 most competitive House districts across the country. Forty of those seats are currently held by Republicans. The results suggest that the GOP's grasp on the majority may be fragile.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joins European and Mideast leaders to talk about the conflict in Lebanon at a conference in Rome. Proposals to end the fighting have focused on deploying an international military force to keep the peace between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.

Israel Decides Against Expanded Offensive
Israel decides not to expand its 17-day-old offensive in Lebanon, one day after its soldiers suffered their bloodiest day in the battle against Hezbollah. Nine soldiers were killed Wednesday, and almost two dozen wounded, in two Lebanese towns near Israel's northern border.

California Seeks Federal Money for Levee System
Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has highlighted the dismal state of the California levee system. He's declared a state of emergency and is asking for millions of dollars to repair the system. Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff will visit and inspect the levees on Friday as he weighs Schwarzenegger's request for more federal dollars. Tamara Keith of member station KPCC reports.
