Annual report on Shackleford Banks horses shows herd of over 100; oldest horse 28 years old.

The Cape Lookout National Seashore and the Foundation for Shackleford Horses released the 2021 findings report on Shackleford Banks horses last week.

At the end of last year, there were 121 horses on Shackleford Banks. The report says about 60% of the herd is female and 40% are male. The oldest horse on the island is a 28-year-old mare.

Eleven foals were sighted in 2021. Since 1999, the average life span of horses on Shackleford Banks has been around 11 years.
