Ex-Insurance Commissioner Goodwin is NC's next DMV chief

The next Division of Motor Vehicles commissioner is Wayne Goodwin, a longtime leader in North Carolina state government and Democratic Party politics. The Department of Transportation announced his hiring on Friday. Goodwin was the elected state insurance commissioner from 2009 to 2017 and a state House member in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also was chairman of the state Democratic Party from 2017 until early 2021 and ran unsuccessfully for his old insurance job in 2020. Goodwin succeeds previous DMV Commissioner Torre Jessup, who is now at the Department of Information Technology.
