Three Public School Districts In Eastern NC Keep Masking Optional As School Starts

nps.gov

Of the 16 counties that Public Radio East covers in Eastern North Carolina, only three have public school districts that have kept masking optional for students and staff. In the past few weeks, school boards all over the state have had to decide whether to mandate mask wearing indoors or make it optional.

Many of those who at first made masks optional have since changed their decision, including Craven, Carteret and most recently, Pender County Schools, who made masks mandatory on Saturday, two days before the first day of classes. Now, Onslow, Jones and Pamlico County Schools are the only remaining districts in the area to keep masks optional. Masks are required on buses due to federal law. COVID-19 cases continue to rise all over the region, including in those three counties.
