North Carolina House Democrats and education advocates are urging Republicans at the legislature to start funding public education programs to comply with obligations declared in long-running litigation. Sponsors of a House measure that would take the first steps to carry out a remedial funding plan held a news conference Monday to promote the bill. The remedial plan envisions spending over at least $5.6 billion on new education expenditures through 2028. This stems from the lawsuit known as “Leandro” that began back in 1994. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has backed funding the remedial plan. The bill now sits in a House committee.
