Eastern North Carolina is experiencing a heat wave as temperatures soared to near 100 degrees in some areas the past several days. John Elardo, a meterologist with the National Weather Service in Morehead City said the hot temperatures combined with the high humidity values create dangerous conditions.
"It's leading to some impactful heat index values getting to around 105 degrees during the peak of the day, and that can put stress on people doing strenuous outdoor activity."
Elardo said people who can't avoid spending time outdoors should to take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for all of Eastern North Carolina on Monday. An Excessive Heat Warning was issued for some inland areas, including Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Wilson. Relief from the scorching temperatures could come later this week, as a cold front is expected to move into the region.
