UPDATED - Repairs are underway at Cape Lookout National Seashore since Hurricane Dorian caused extensive damage to historic structures and the coastline. Crews are currently working to stabilize buildings at Portsmouth Village and Long Point Cabins. North Core Banks, where several cabins were badly damaged, remains closed to the public. Restrooms, water fill stations, and showers on Shackleford Banks and South Core Banks will be functional on Thursday. The Keepers Quarters Museum, the Light Station Visitors Center, and the Great Island Cabin Camp are set to reopen later this week. Twenty-two employees from several National Parks are helping with the recovery efforts. Visitors are asked to be careful of storm debris on the beaches, wear sturdy footware, and pack out all personal trash.

The cabins on North Core Banks also received major damage. The storm created more than 50 new inlets cutting through from the Atlantic Ocean to the Core Sound. According to a news release, nearly 70 National Park Service employees from across the nation are helping clean up and repair infrastructure. Hurricane Dorian passed offshore of Cape Lookout National Seashore as a category one hurricane on Friday.
