Delayed by Hurricane Florence, a habitat for a pair of flightless bald eagles opens next month at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pink Knoll Shores. The habitat was scheduled to open Memorial Day, but a delay in getting materials and labor in because of the hurricane slowed the process down. Aquarium curator Clint Taylor says the habitat was completed by Memorial Day but time was needed to acclimate the two bald eagles to their new home. The two birds are flightless. One comes from the Cape Fear Raptor Center where her wings were amputated following a believed encounter with power lines, while the other came from a wildlife center in Illinois following amputation of her left wing after being found with an irreparable injury. They’ll now permanently reside in a 3000-square-foot oasis with large perches and a rock pond. The public can visit Eagle Landing at the Aquarium starting July 4.
