The U.S. Small Business Administration is offering a variety of programs to help homeowners finish repairs and prevent damages from future disasters. The SBA is providing low-interest loans to help homeowners, business owners and renters make repairs if FEMA and insurance won’t fully cover the cost.
“People are just starting to figure out that they might need a little extra money," said Karen Knapik, public affairs specialist with the SBA. "They’re going to go back to our application process and start applying.”
Those who had significant damage and completed the SBA application process when they registered with FEMA may already be eligible for programs that help with mitigation, relocation and refinancing.
“An inspector comes out to your house, does an inspection. They make a calculation and offer a certain amount. At that point, you can be considered for additional programs, assuming you have reached that significant damage mark.”
So far, Knapik said the SBA has approved $211 million dollars in Hurricane Florence disaster assistance.
