The North Carolina Department of Transportation is collecting comments on a proposal to widen a stretch of Highway 17 in two Eastern North Carolina counties.
The project includes expanding a 10-mile section of road that runs through Beaufort and Martin counties to four lanes. NCDOT Public Information Officer for Division One Tim Hass said the $74 million project will improve travel and safety for commuters.
“Assuming everything goes as planned, we’ll be buying up right of way. The project would be let in the summer of 2020. And you’d probably see construction begin in fall of that year, fall 2020.”
The public meeting will take place Thursday, August 9th from 4 to 7 pm at Macedonia Christian Church in Williamston. Hass said representatives with NCDOT will be available to answer questions and provide information about the proposed project. Comments can be submitted by phone, email or mail by August 23rd.
