The State Department of Transportation crews are out in force preparing for ice, snow and sleet. PRE’s Meredith Radford has more.
NCDOT began pretreating primary routes with brine on Wednesday. Pitt County Maintenance Engineer Jordan Davenport says being proactive, preventing the bond between the ice and snow and the pavement, is key. So is staying off the roads if you can.
“If you’re able, you know staying home or staying off the roadways is absolutely the number one best thing you could do from a safety standpoint.”
He added that staying off the roads also gives maintenance workers more room to improve road conditions quickly. It will be an around the clock effort for the workers. NCDOT Division 2 communications officer Tim Hass says that the time to gather emergency supplies is now.
“We’re using this day to prepare, so the people at home should be using this day to prepare.”
Everyone in Davenport’s unit is working toward storm preparation, along with additional DOT personal from other units.
