Onslow County has launched a new mass communication safe citizen program. Jared Brumbaugh has details.
The new system, called ALERT Onslow, seeks to rapidly deliver emergency messages via landline or mobile phone to predefined groups or geographic areas. The database will utilize E-911 data and be available to citizens who self-register. The new program should offer a cost savings for the county over and above the previous service. Alert Onslow will be active 24/7 and warn residents about threats that could include hazardous materials, wildfires, evacuations and missing persons. Optional National Weather Service alerts are part of the new system. ALERT ONSLOW will also offer message translation into German, French, Japanese and Spanish.
