Eutsler Lecture in Children’s Literature
East Carolina University's Department of English will host its Eutsler Lecture in Children’s Literature and Pedagogy Workshop on Jan. 25, 2024.
Dr. Jane Haladay, Professor of American Indian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, will deliver the lecture, “Coming Home: Affirming Community through Lumbee Children’s Literature.” Dr. Haladay will discuss her research on using children’s books by Lumbee authors Brittany Hunt (Whoz Ya People?) and Leslie Ann Locklear and Christina Pacheco (It’s Lumbee Homecoming, Y’all!: Nakoma’s Greatest Tradition) in her service-learning courses at UNCP, which are partnered with students at Union Elementary School in Rowland, North Carolina. Dr. Haladay will also lead a pedagogical workshop for students and instructors on how to engage students and community members with North Carolina literature through service-learning classes.
Dr. Haladay is the co-editor of Narratives for Educating for Sustainability in Unsustainable Environments (Michigan State UP, 2017), the winner of UNCP’s Excellence in Service-Learning Award (2016), and a winner of the UNC Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching (2023). Dr. Haladay’s essay, “Coming Home: Affirming Community through Lumbee Children’s Literature” appeared in the 2023 issue of North Carolina Literary Review, the special feature section of which is focused on Native American literature of North Carolina; it is also the winner of the Randall Kenan Prize for best essay on a new North Carolina writer.
