Wildlife officials are urging people to secure their homes following a black bear attack inside a home in the mountains last week.
According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, a woman inside her house suffered non-life-threatening injuries when she surprised a female black bear that had walked indoors. Biologists say the bear showed absolutely no fear of humans because it had repeatedly gotten into unsecured trash outside and pet food inside an unlocked door.
Because this bear now views houses as a food source, wildlife officers are actively tracking the animal to humanely euthanize it. People are cautioned to lock all doors and windows, bring in pet food, and secure trash bins.
With fall approaching, experts warn that leaving food out creates dangerous habits that ultimately cost bears their lives.
