Health officials are warning North Carolina shoppers to check their refrigerators after contaminated alfalfa sprouts sparked a multi-state outbreak.
Two cases have been confirmed in the state, part of a larger breakout across fifteen states that has left 55 people sick and four hospitalized. The Food and Drug Administration issued a recall for Everything Sprouts and Calco brand alfalfa sprouts due to a dangerous dual contamination of E. coli and Salmonella.
The recalled five-ounce clear plastic containers have been sold at local grocery stores and restaurants since late May. Anyone who has purchased these brands should throw them out immediately and sanitize their refrigerator.
Symptoms of infection include severe stomach cramps, fever, and bloody diarrhea.
