Heavy traffic delays are expected in Jacksonville Monday as the community gathers to lay a legendary local officer to rest.
The Onslow County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to prepare for afternoon delays during the celebration of life and funeral procession for retired Jacksonville Police Lieutenant XY Brown. Brown, who was believed to be the oldest serving law enforcement officer in the nation, died after a historic 68-year career that ended with his retirement last December at the age of 98.
Services begin at 11:00 Monday morning at the River of Life Church on Gum Branch Road. Following the service, a funeral procession will travel to the Coastal Carolina Veterans’ Cemetery on Montford Landing Road.
Law enforcement officials expect the heaviest traffic impacts between 1:00-2:00 this afternoon along the route. People planning to stand along the processional route to pay their respects are strictly reminded not to block any roads or local business entrances. Officials note that school arrivals and dismissals will not be impacted.
