The Lenoir County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the intentional shooting and destruction of a local highway surveillance camera.
Sheriff Jackie Rogers confirmed that a Flock license plate reader on Highway 58 outside of Kinston was struck multiple times, leaving visible bullet holes. Rogers said investigators have been tracking the damage for months and warned that those responsible will face criminal charges.
The vandalism follows recent public outcry over the county's 16-camera network, with people raising privacy concerns at local forums. Sheriff Rogers continues to defend the system, emphasizing that strict auditing policies are in place to ensure the cameras are only used for legitimate law enforcement investigations.
