Drivers heading into Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point need to prepare for major traffic shifts starting Monday.
Beginning August 17, the outbound lanes at the Main Gate on Roosevelt Boulevard will shut down completely. Base officials say the closure is required to install critical security and infrastructure upgrades, and the project is expected to last 4 to 6 weeks.
To prevent total gridlock, base access patterns are getting a major overhaul.
The Main Gate will remain open 24/7, but for inbound traffic only. Anyone trying to leave the air station will be redirected to the Cunningham Gate, which will handle outbound traffic around the clock—including extra lane modifications during the peak afternoon rush from 2:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Slocum Gate will keep its normal hours but will restrict access to inbound traffic only between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. on weekdays.
