Tropical Storm Cristobal has formed in the Atlantic, but North Carolina emergency officials say the system poses no threat to the coast.
The National Hurricane Center confirms the storm developed over 2,000 miles out in the open ocean. It is currently moving east-northeast at over 20 miles per hour, tracking directly toward Europe and completely away from the United States mainland.
With maximum sustained winds holding near 45 miles per hour, forecasters expect Cristobal to be short-lived, weakening rapidly as it moves over cooler waters.
While this specific storm remains out at sea, meteorologists warn that hurricane season is approaching its traditional September peak. Forecasters are already monitoring another tropical wave moving off the African coast, giving it a 40 percent chance of development over the next seven days.
