The federal government has awarded $110 million to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for a bridge replacement project in Plymouth and Manteo.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said some infrastructure projects are so large and complex that they defy traditional funding systems, and so significant that they become iconic parts of the American landscape.
The STERLING project was one of nine nationally significant projects selected for this first year of the Mega Grant program; it will replace the Alligator River Bridge on U.S. Highway 64 with a modern high-rise fixed-span bridge.
The project will also provide broadband access to thousands of people along U.S. 64 from I-95 to N.C. 12 on the Outer Banks.
