The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man they say shot at deputies after a chase ended in a crash.

Update: The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office spent several hours searching for a man they say shot at deputies after a chase ended in a crash and they cautioned people that Preston Mertes was armed and dangerous and asked some to stay inside their homes.

At about 4:30 Monday afternoon, CCSO took over a Dare County pursuit just past the Wright Memorial Bridge.

The vehicle driven by Mertes continued into Grandy, where deputies deployed stop sticks and officials say the car swerved and wrecked into the ditch across from Macedonia Church Road.

Mertes got out of the car with what government officials called an assult-style rifle and fired five shots as he fled into the woods.

Law enforcement surrounded the area and Mertes was taken into custody at about 10:30 p.m.
