The North Carolina Department of Transportation has dropped the Trent River Bridge down to one lane on the westbound side, where Highway 17 and Highway 70 come together, to make repairs after a truck crashed through the concrete guardrail last week.
The driver of an empty 18-wheel concrete truck hydroplaned, lost control and plunged about 50 feet to the ground beneath the bridge, according to North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The lane closure will last until about 4 p.m. each day for the next four days, when repairs are expected to be complete.
NCDOT is asking people to slow down and expect delays in the area.
It was the second such incident this year in New Bern. In May, a driver troopers said was going too fast for the wet conditions and lost control, crashing through a concrete barrier on the U.S. 17 Bypass bridge and falling about 50 feet to the ground below.
