North Carolina Democratic legislative leaders want their colleagues to provide more financial resources to recruit and retain educators in the public schools. Senate Minority Leader Dan Blue and House counterpart Robert Reives spoke on Thursday at the Legislative Building, where a week of no-vote floor sessions wrapped up. The lawmakers pointed to districts trying to fill thousands of teacher and staff positions as many traditional public schools return to class next week. The Democrats also say staffing is a challenge because people are unfairly “demonizing” public education and teachers. Republican legislators in charge of the General Assembly have defended their commitment to public education.
