A precautionary swimming advisory has been posted at a sound-side area in Surf City. State recreational water quality officials said Tuesday that the advisory is due to public health risks associated with a wastewater spill caused by a lightning strike. The Town of Surf City reports that 100,000 gallons of untreated wastewater potentially discharged into Water Bay. According to a news release, the swimming advisory pertains to waters between the Highway 210 Bridge and Beacon #65, including Water Bay and a portion of Stump Sound. State officials will lift the advisory once test results show levels within state and federal standards.
