The N.C. Department of Transportation will remove lane closures during the Independence Day holiday weekend to ease travel congestion. Crews will open all lanes where possible on interstates and highways on the morning of Thursday, June 30 and keep the lanes open through Tuesday, July 5. A few construction projects that require long-term lane closures, like bridge replacements, will retain their current traffic patterns. With an increase in motorists on roadways, NCDOT is asking drivers to stay alert, be patient, and don’t drive distracted. In 2020, over 1,400 crashes occurred in North Carolina during the Fourth of July weekend, resulting in 725 injuries and 20 fatalities.
