A runoff election will decide who will serve as the next Mayor of New Bern. Toussaint Summers won the initial election by a small margin of 4 votes out of over 5,500 votes cast during the May 17th primary. On Tuesday, Ward 6 Alderman Jeffrey Odham called for a runoff against the city’s former chief of police. The runoff election will be held on July 26th. The New Bern Sun Journal reports that since 2013, city elections have needed a runoff in three separate elections.
