Camp Lejeune officials warn people to stay off Browns Island

Camp Lejeune officials are reminding the public to keep off Browns Island due to unexploded ordnance in the area. The small island between Onslow Beach and Hammocks Beach State Park has served as a target area since the 1940s. It still contains dangerous hidden explosives that pose a risk to anchoring boaters or individuals who ignore posted warning signs and walk on the island. Military Police and the U.S. Coast Guard will continue to patrol the area and issue citations to trespassers that will require an appearance before the federal magistrate in Wilmington. Violators can be imprisoned up to six months and fined a maximum of $5,000.
