Maintenance work on the railroad tracks in Newport has been delayed due to weather. The N.C. Department of Transportation said in a news release that crews with Norfolk Southern have completed half of the needed work to the railroad tracks along U.S. 70 in Newport. The final half will be completed on Monday, March 14. While the work is underway, traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and shifted onto one side of the highway. NCDOT said motorists can avoid this section of U.S. 70 by way of Chatham Street, which connects to the highway on either side of the town. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and to be mindful of the temporary traffic pattern.
