North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein’s office is warning people to watch out for QR code scams. According to a news release, many businesses and services added QR codes during the pandemic to help connect consumers more easily with information and links. But scammers are using the QR codes to redirect people to malicious websites with the intent to steal personal information. People can protect themselves by never downloading an app or software from a QR code and confirming that the URL associated with a QR code looks authentic. Consumers should also make sure that the QR code hasn’t been tampered with since criminals will use a sticker to put their malicious code on top of a business’ code.
