The Croatan National Forest has another prescribed burn today in Carteret County. The 1,206-acre burn is located a mile northeast of Cape Carteret. A helicopter will be utilized to implement the burns. According to a news release, the public should be aware of smoke and firefighters working in the area and avoid the area. While the burn is taking place, Millis Road and Pettiford Creek Road will be temporarily closed. Prescribed burns reduce the amount of fuel on the forest floor which helps prevent wildfires. They also help improve habitat for native species, such as the longleaf pine and the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker.
